Over 100 past and present volunteers gathered at the Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens to celebrate on the 16th October.

After a wet start to the day, over 100 past and present Botanic Gardens Volunteers, many of whom now live far away, were treated to fine weather and a morning of catching up with old friends and meeting fellow volunteers last Thursday. Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens are now 25 years old and to celebrate this special occasion the Gardens Management Committee held a special celebratory morning tea.

Mayor, Cr John Brent, welcomed guests and praised the work of the many dedicated volunteers. Cr Brent acknowledged the foresight of our late Beaudesert Shire Councillor, Vonda Youngman, who was so instrumental in the inception of the Gardens.

Botanic Gardens Honorary Manager, Roger Bell, spoke at length about the achievements of the Volunteers and the support of the Beaudesert Shire Council and the Scenic Rim Regional Council. Mr Bell said that the in-kind efforts of the hands-on Volunteers and the Springtime on the Mountain Volunteers amounted to over $500,000 pa. In 2006 the Garden Club injected $60,000 into the Botanic Gardens - $67,000 in 2007 and $75,000 in 2008.

Special friend and Mentor of the Gardens, Ross McKinnon AM, Curator of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, entertained the group with a warm and amusing address. Mr McKinnon said the Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens are extremely unique and he holds them and the Volunteers in very high esteem. Mr McKinnon officially opened the Botanic Gardens in 1988 and has always been a greatly loved and appreciated supporter.

On completion of morning tea and the formalities, guests were treated to a walk through the gardens which moved one of the early Volunteers so much, he was reduced to tears and commented that he was thrilled to see the progress and to know that all the hard work in the early days was not wasted.

To commemorate the 25th Anniversary, a special 2009 Calendar of the Botanic Gardens was produced  with  all proceeds going to the Gardens.
